Milo BRAND + INTERFACE SYSTEM V1.2
00 / MANIFESTOMILO BRAND + INTERFACE SYSTEM V1.2

A personal operating system for intent.

The human manages intent. Milo manages computation. Technology in service of human purpose, so people have more room for making, thinking, painting, writing, building, learning, connecting, observing, living.

Why Milo00.0
A golden lion tamarin in profile on a branch, orange mane lit from the left, tail extended, body set forward.
A GOLDEN LION TAMARIN · SMITHSONIAN'S NATIONAL ZOO · CC0 · A REPRESENTATIVE ANIMAL, NOT A PHOTOGRAPH OF MILO

Milo was a golden lion tamarin at Zoo Atlanta. The founder knew him while serving there as a docent.

Milo had one leg.

He was the fastest of the tamarins.

The belief

Circumstance should not define capability.

Everything after this follows from it: run it on the machine you already own, spend nothing unless the work needs it, ask nothing of a person that the machine can settle, and put the whole thing within reach of someone who is not an expert.

That ecosystem is called Offline, and the word means two things at once — computation that stays on your own machines, and a product that works hard enough for you to close the laptop and go and live. 38 Origin has the rest, including what this story may never be used for.

Product thesis00.1

Two hierarchies: the human holds goal, project and task; Milo holds run, step, executor and artifact.

The human hierarchy
  1. 01GOAL
  2. 02PROJECT
  3. 03TASK

The human manages intent. Nothing below the task line asks a person to choose what Milo can reliably choose.

The system hierarchy
  1. 01TASK
  2. 02RUN
  3. 03STEP
  4. 04EXECUTOR
  5. 05ARTIFACT

Milo manages computation. A task expands into runs; runs into steps; steps go to executors; executors leave artifacts.

Why00.2

Not productivity for its own sake.

Milo removes friction so a person has more room for the things that are theirs to do.

Milo removes technological friction so a person has more room for the things that are actually theirs to do:

  • making
  • thinking
  • painting
  • writing
  • building
  • learning
  • connecting
  • observing
  • living
Cultural thesis00.3

AI is a new medium, not a new author.

Generative media joins the lineage of paint, print and film; people remain the authors of culture.

Milo champions artists, artistry, craft, nature, the environment, human creativity, human agency, purpose and beauty. Generative media is treated as the latest chapter in the long history of human making: paint, then print, then photography, film, digital, computation. Each medium widened what people could make. None replaced the people. People remain the authors of culture.

There is a philosophical foundation beneath this, held with reverence and without decoration. Human beings are made in the image of God. Human creativity can be understood as part of humanity's relationship to the Creator: making, observing, interpreting and cultivating creation. Read this way, art history is partly the record of people attempting to understand, emulate, respond to and express the beauty of their Father and His creation. Milo is not religious software, and the interface carries no religious symbols. The foundation shows up in what the product honours: human dignity, creative purpose, beauty, stewardship, art, nature, meaning. The everyday product stays welcoming regardless of what a person believes.

Creative equation00.4

The evolution of international modernism into the AI age.

Six lineages contribute a method each — grid, intervention, computation, defaults, craft, the sublime — and none is imitated.

Methodology, not imitation. No Off-White graphics, no Nous layouts, no Apple chrome. The lineage is a way of deciding, not a look to copy.

Language00.6

One master position, one product line; UI speaks in short declaratives, editorial may be poetic.

Master position

A personal operating system for intent.

Product line

Technology in service of human purpose.

Product UI speaks briefly: On it. Done. Three files changed. This needs your approval. Running locally. Finished in 2m 14s. Editorial and campaign language may be more poetic, and stays rare. Milo never says "Great question" or "I'd be happy to help". The full hierarchy is in 21 Language.
